Born between 22 December and 19 January? On the medicine wheel as Sun Bear set it down, your birth totem is the Snow Goose — the bird that flies the longest road in the hardest season, and lands exactly where it meant to. The wheel opens its year with you, in the deepest part of…
Born between 20 January and 18 February? On the medicine wheel as Sun Bear set it down, your birth totem is the Otter — the wheel’s unconventional thinker, placed in the coldest stretch of the year and somehow the most playful animal on the whole ring. If that contradiction annoys you, you are probably not…
People rarely look up what a yellow butterfly means on an ordinary day. The search usually happens after a heavy season — illness in the family, grief, a long dark stretch — when something small and bright sailed past and it felt, absurdly and undeniably, like a message. If that is roughly where you are:…
Nobody photographs a grey feather. But a white one — on the doorstep, on the car seat, dead centre on an empty path — gets picked up, kept, and quietly wondered about, sometimes for years. Ask anyone who has lost someone recently and found one; they will tell you exactly where it was lying. The…
An owl encounter is different from other animal signs because you usually feel seen first. The flat face, the fixed eyes, the silence — an owl on a fence post at dusk does not scurry into meaning the way smaller creatures do. It regards you. Which is precisely the split in its symbolism: half the…
A hummingbird stops people mid-sentence. Something the size of a thumb, hovering motionless on eighty wingbeats a second, drinking from a flower without landing — and then gone, sideways, in a way the eye cannot follow. If one paused in front of you, at your feeder or your window or absurdly close to your face,…
A dragonfly hovering near you is doing something almost nothing else alive can do: flying in six directions at will, on wings that are essentially light. It spends years as a drab hunter underwater before it ever sees the sky — and once it has wings, it has weeks. People who learn that fact after…
A butterfly does not land near you often. When one does — on your windowsill, your sleeve, the flowers you stopped beside — it tends to arrive at moments that already feel like edges: after a loss, during a decision, in the middle of becoming someone slightly different. That timing is why nearly every culture…
Let’s deal with the fear first, because it is probably why you are here: in most of the traditions that actually watched them, a black butterfly is not a death omen. That reputation belongs mainly to one large black moth — the Ascalapha odorata, the “mariposa de la muerte” of Mexican and Caribbean folklore —…
If a bat has crossed your evening — looped over your garden, clung to your porch wall, found its way indoors — you are probably braced for a dark meaning. Take a breath: over most of the world and most of history, you would have been congratulated. The bat’s sinister reputation is recent, local, and…
