What Is My Spirit Animal? A Free Quiz That Gives You Two

Seven questions, and none of them ask which animal you like. The one that comes back is the one your answers describe — and a second that is only walking with you this season.

Why the quiz does not ask which animal you like

Because you would pick the wolf. Almost everybody picks the wolf, or the owl, and then the result tells them what they already decided about themselves, which is entertaining for about four seconds.

These seven questions ask about something else entirely: what you do when things go wrong, what people consistently misread in you, how you handle an ending. The animal falls out of the answers. Sometimes it is the one you were hoping for. More often it is the rabbit, and the rabbit is usually right.

Why you get two animals and not one

Because one of them moves.

Five of the questions are about temperament — the things that were true of you at nine and will be true at sixty. Those decide your animal. The last two are about the season you are actually in, and they decide the second one: the animal walking beside you at the moment, which is usually there to interrupt something.

Come back when the year has turned. The first animal will almost certainly be the same. The second one frequently is not, and the change is the part worth paying attention to.

Where this comes from, honestly

Animal symbolism is not one tradition, it is dozens, and most of what circulates online flattens them into a single invented system. This quiz does not do that, and it does not claim to.

What it draws on is European folklore — the Celtic material in particular, where the animal you are born under and the direction it faces are both long-established ideas — and the work of Ted Andrews, whose Animal Speak is the standard modern reference for what individual creatures have been taken to mean. Where a meaning here is his, it is his.

What you will not find is anything presented as authentic Indigenous teaching. Those are living traditions belonging to specific nations, they are not interchangeable, and a great deal of what is sold online as “Native American” animal wisdom was written in the twentieth century by people with no claim to it. Luna would rather tell you where a thing actually comes from.

Wolf	Loyal to the few, wary of the rest. The loneliness is the price of not pretending.
Owl	Sees what daylight hides. Knew the bad news was coming before it arrived.
Fox	Wins by being quicker, not stronger. Finds the door nobody noticed.
Bear	Slow to anger, alarming when it lands. Needs a retreat it keeps skipping.
Deer	Soft in a way people underestimate, alert in a way they never see.
Hawk	Hunts from height. Sees the pattern while everyone else is inside it.
Raven	Arrives when something is ending, and is unusually unafraid of it.
Butterfly	Has already been three other creatures. The changing is the design.
Dragonfly	Lives in two elements, belongs to neither. Almost impossible to fool twice.
Cat	Affection on its own terms. Unbothered by being called difficult.
Snake	Sheds the whole skin and does not go back.
Spider	Builds the structure everything else lives in, and is rarely thanked.
Hummingbird	Works absurdly hard to reach the good part, and does.
Horse	Needs to know it could leave. Confinement does something others do not see.
Rabbit	Registers danger before the evidence. Usually right about why.
Cardinal	Arrives as a sign. Carries messages, frequently without meaning to.

Questions people ask

Can my spirit animal change?

The one that came from the first five questions, rarely — that is temperament, and temperament is stubborn. The second one changes with the season, and is supposed to.

What if I got an animal I do not like?

That is usually the useful one. Nobody hopes for the rabbit or the spider, and both of them describe something real that the wolf would have let you avoid thinking about.

Is this the same as a totem?

Not quite. Totem, in the traditions the word actually belongs to, means something specific and communal that a quiz has no business assigning. What this gives you is a symbol to think with.

Does it store my answers?

No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
